In contrast sentences, one or more words are used to contrast one idea with another. The contrast, however, must not be like saying that one idea is better than another, for it is not obvious that either is better than the other.Contrast in a writing sample is used to show that two ideas have something to offer about each other. The better the contrast, the more serious the argument becomes. To demonstrate this, consider a plot line. One idea is to kill all the evil people, another is to set up a super spy agency to protect the people from this evil scheme.To demonstrate the difference between a thesis statement and a contrast statement, you might use the same example of a child's progress in math but have the conclusion to be: 'But if you teach him (the child) how to use numbers correctly, he will be able to go out into the world and make a difference!' This could be thought of as a contrast statement, but you can make it sound much more serious by the use of an element of contrast.Another example of a contrast sentence is story analysis. In a story analysis, there is something interesting about a character that intrigues the reader. The contrast is the interest in the character. In addition, if the character is well-developed, then the reader can look forward to seeing what else is being added to the story.The last of the categories is the theme. The contrast between two themes is to see how they interrelate. The difference in these examples is that one is making a contrast sentence and the other is using a theme. In this case, you could use a contrast sentence like, 'Mrs. Stevens writes articles about small business and how to succeed in life,' and then add the wor ds 'and how to succeed in life' at the end of the sentence.Another way to use contrast is in response to a question that has been asked. A writer might use a contrast statement such as, 'In other words, when it comes to this story, which really made a difference?' Although this example could be read as a thesis statement, it could also be read as a theme statement.The most important thing to remember about contrast statements is that they need to be part of a balanced sentence. The written word should be in harmony with the writer's other writing.
